How to Get CMMI Level 3 or Automotive SPICE Level 3 Certified?

The heading "How to Get CMMI Level 3 or Automotive SPICE Level 3 Certified?" has many words which are technicallyincorrect. Let's see:
  • Level 3 : The word "level" is incomplete hence refelects incorrect meaning. There are two words (Capability Level & Maturity Level) used in CMMI. In Automtoive SPICE the word used is Capability Level (CL).
  • Certified : Certification word is typically used when audit is conducted against ISO standards like ISO 9001, 27001, etc. The word certifed is used incorrectly in respect of CMMI or Automotive SPICE. The owner of these two models (CMMI - CMMI Institute, CMU, USA & Automotive SPICE - VDA, Germany) does not provide any certificate of achievement. The compliance check conucted by expert (Lead Appraiser or Competent Assessor) provides reports of complaince. Also, he/she provides a certificate of compliance which is termed as "certificate" reflecting as "certified".

Now let's understnad steps involved to achieve CMMI ML-3 / CL-3 or Automotive SPICE CL-3.
  • Understand "as-is" status: Invove topic expert to conduct gap analysis & ask to report gap between desired CL / ML and current status of processes in organizaiton.
  • Define / Refine processes: Based on gap identified, define organizaiton processes or improvise processes (if available). These definition must be done by internal members who has the knowledge of organization practices of thoese processes & have good understanding on subject. Expert should be involved either in definition or in reviews to make sure the processes (to-be) are compliant to required processes / process area.
  • Train organizaiton personnel: Provide trainings (regular) to organizaiton members who are required to perform the task.
  • Monitor process implementation: Trained persons will perform the task in assinged projects. The implementation shall be monitored for effectiveness. If required update to processes shall be done. This will follow the training and implementation.
  • Perfrom Appraisal / Assessment: Train members (internal or external) to assist performing appraisal / assessment. Then evaluate selected project against selected process / process area under the leadership of Lead Appraiser (CMMI) or Principal / COmpetent Assessor (Automotive SPICE). The result will provide certificate of achievement.
